My First week experience in LIT 102 class
First of all , I can truly admit that I had and still have great enthusiasm for the ‘All About’ books. It was like love at first sight . When this was introduced by the lecturer, it caught my attention. I was eager to learn more about these books. My lecturer ensured that the process was done step-by-step. She never took it for granted that everyone knew what this book was about. I was really fascinated by the way she introduced the book and the opportunities she gave students during the process. She modelled her task well, making it easy for each student to follow and be actively engaged. Also, the lecturer did not take any of her students for granted. She allotted time in class to work on the All About book. Also, it was advised to work at home so that this will assist both the lecturer and the students to speed up the process. Additionally, I definitely see myself introducing this All About book in my classroom to get students to produce one of their own. What really grabbed my attention was that this book can be used not only in Language Arts classes but in any other subject area. Moreover, this will assist students in staying on task as they take responsibility for their learning. Also, this strategy will not only appeal to sensory learners but to the tactile learners as well. It is often said that students learn more through doing. This does not work by only showing but by having students engaged in such hands-on activities so that they will retain information learnt.
Here is a short video on The All About Book 👇
This is a very simple step by step video that I found very interesting in creating an All About Book, please watch carefully. Pray that this video was very informative to you as well.
Hi Makeda, very interesting video on The All About Me Book. It was very informative and provided detailed easy-to-follow steps for creating this book. The point you made about the book being used for all subject areas is very important. Students can make an All About....Book after they finish a unit or topic in Science, Social Studies, History etc. Writing across the Curriculum!!! often we advocate writing in the Language Arts Classroom and fail to realise that writing should take place in the content area subject. Additionally, Mrs.Lazarus was indeed the driving force in our understanding of the All About...Book. Her passion for education really showed in her teaching instruction.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Dessy-Ann, indeed Mrs. Lazarus always shows enthusiasm in delivery her lessons. She really did an excellent job in explaining and demonstrating how to create an All About Book. Indeed the video I posted was very informative and definitely provided clear steps in creating this book. Additionally, it is geared to cater for the visual leaners which is very important in differentiating instruction. Am happy that we both agreed, that writing should be done across the curriculum and not only in our Language Art classes. This fell right at my door step. As a technical teacher I am definitely looking forward in creating an All About Book with my students. Thank you Dessy_ Ann for your comments and let's both take a page from Mrs. Lazarus book and be driving forces in encouraging writing in all subject areas.
DeleteHello Makeda,
ReplyDeleteI too have similar sentiments that our lecturer Mrs. Lazarus gave us such a detailed explanation accompanied by examples of creative, illustrative ‘All About Books’. I recall when creating my book, we were told that one description of oneself should be on one page. Half of the page will be for sketching illustrations, whether at the top or below the page and the other half should be specifically for writing descriptive information as it pertains to oneself. I also remember if one chooses to sketch his or her illustrations at the top, this pattern should be maintained throughout the book or vice versa. Seeing that you primarily teach Food and Nutrition to your students, do you see yourself using ‘All About Books’ to instruct your students regarding a concept in that subject? For example, I for one can visualize you using it for having the students write an ‘ALL About Food Groups Book’.
You made me smile Denisha, as they say great minds think alike. I definitely thought about doing an All About Food Groups Book with my Home Economics students. I can just visualize this book being very creative and students will have fun in creating their own. As teacher it is very important to implement some of the new strategies that we learn. This will encourage students to be actively involved and also it caters to different learners. Thanks for your suggestion and definitely can wait to use this strategy in my classroom.
