16th-20th Zoom Zoom Zoom

This week was very interesting, our lecturer really made this session applicable. What stood out to me was the Zoom in Strategy. This strategy typically refers to a method of storytelling where you start with a broad overview of a topic and then progressively delve into finer details. In doing so the writer is providing a more comprehensive understanding of a subject by examine it at different levels of magnification, much like zooming in on a digital image.

I found this strategy very interesting because it allows the writer to facilitate a more comprehensive and engaging exploration of a topic, making it a valuable tool which will be ideal for storytelling. I really like the idea in which Mrs. Lazarus took us to the Botanical Gardens with the intention of taking one picture in capturing the Ministerial Complex. It was a challenge in taking one shot that can really capture this. My colleges had to walk to a higher point in order for capturing a clearer shot of what they wanted. Minutes after our Lecturer made it easier but asking us to zoom in on one thing we like and take a photo of it. This was very relatable because we where able to experience at first hand how the zooming strategy works. This strategy is one that can be used in my classroom, where students will be able to create suspense making the reader delve deeper. This will allow the writer to build tension and reveal important plot points gradually, which create a sense of anticipation and involves the reader in getting closer to the subject. As  a teacher this really opened my eyes allowing me to reflect on how strategy can be introduced. I will definitely do some further research on this strategy and videos that can provide vivid information on the zoom in strategy.

This link below I came across essentially provide a vivid picture on how the zoom strategy works.👇

  1. Hello Makeda,
Your notion that writers use the zooming-in strategy to create anticipation through tension reminds me of when I was writing my first draft of my Narrative story. I kept scanning my writing piece over, wondering if I sufficiently slowed down my piece where it showcased essential climaxes in the story.
The video you used further strengthens the point that the zooming-in strategy can be used to contemplate what writers want to convey to their readers concerning their writing pieces. This includes making use of different sensory details that were learned from descriptive writing to add that element of awe to writing.

    1. Hey Denisha while reading your comment I realize that you were able to reflect on your first Narrative draft. Therefore you were able to revisit your story a few times to ensure that your objective was achieved. Again we can see that time played an important role when writing. In addition we can admit that writing can be time consuming but once strategy is modelled correctly, the end product will be beautiful. I am elated that the video was used as some form of support. Does the thought cross your mind in introducing this strategy to your students?

  2. Hi Makeda, Thank you for this video clip. Using this strategy to write my narrative piece is a bit challenging. I am having a hard time deciding which aspect of my story that I wanted to zoom in on.
How has it been for you? Do you have any tips that can help me use this strategy?

    1. Hi Dessy Ann, I had the same challenged wondering which aspect is best to zoom in on my narrative piece. However, I am willing to share at least two tips with you. First, you must employ vivid and sensory-rich descriptions in order for making the focal point come to life. Therefore, you need to engage the reader's senses with details about sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. Additionally, show don't tell. Instead of simply telling the reader about the focal point, show its significance through actions, dialogue and emotions of the characters involved. Please let me know if any of the tips assisted you in implementing this strategy and also how was it useful?
