The Pre-writing Stage

  2nd - 6th October,2023

As time goes by my knowledge of the writing process is increasing class after class. It’s like every time our lecturer presents on the writing process, am learning something new. For me, what was really interesting was when Mrs. Lazarus demonstrated a cluster and made mention that it should not be vague but it should provide examples in written or picture format. This session was an eye opener, I must admit that Mrs. Lazarus has a wealth of knowledge and she's an expert in teaching Language Arts strategies. What I love most is the opportunities that she always provides for us as students to be engage actively. This is critical in the teaching and learning process, as we learn the more students are involved, they retain information better. I am eager to use a cluster to assist in the prewriting stage but in a meaningful way, where my students will be better able to use it to enhance their writing pieces. As a mother and teacher, this bit of information will be very useful in demonstrating the first stage of writing. I am now in a better place to provide the appropriate assistance that is needed by my students and daughter in the writing process.

I have watched this video and found the steps to be very simply and straight forward. It is a very useful and informative and I hope that you can find it very useful as well

    3. Hi Markeda, I am so sorry that you encountered difficulties this week. Nevertheless, I am pleased that you gained valuable insights during your learning journey. Writing can be chaotic as you mentioned in your post, however, it offers significant rewards. Its recursive nature adds to its beauty, allowing you to revisit and edit your work in preparation for publishing. I most certainly agree that it is essential to teach the writing process effectively, but, you must do so in an enjoyable and interactive manner. This in turn will reduce students' fear for/about writing. Though time consuming, I can concur that this process can be done through out the curriculum. I think once applied in the varying subject areas (depending on the topic being taught of course), we will gain adequate practice and become experts in teaching it effectively.
Keep at it girl! We got this!😉

    4. Thanks much Andrea for the encouraging words and you are definitely correct, the recursive nature of writing really adds to the improvement in ones writing. Practice is the key in getting a job done properly, therefore as I prepare myself for practice teaching I will try my best to ensure that students are given adequate time during the pre-writing stage and opportunity for editing.

  2. Hello Makeda,
I agree with how you feel regarding the challenges of blogging. Regarding your post, you mentioned the presentation as relatable and valuable. One believes that it is relatable because Mrs. Lazarus presented the concept of the writing process in such a way that it makes one feel confident that I can implement it and execute it continuously in the classroom. Therefore, my takeaway from the lesson was that one must first plan what will be written by gathering information before registering.

    1. Hello Denisha, I do agree that Mrs. Lazarus did an excellent job in presenting the concept of the writing process. I took a moment to process what you mentioned about the confidence you gain after the process was presented to you. Just think about how our students will feel if the same was done with them. Therefore as teacher we need to put our feet in our students shoes and ensure that we cater to needs of our students.

  3. Hi Makeda, I agree that we are learning so many new strategies that we could implement in the classrooms. The prewriting stage also was an eye-opener for me because reflecting on my writing process, I do believe I was rushing through the prewriting stage. After this week I will surely take time to gather information before I start writing. I am happy to know that you will also use what you learned to help your daughter.

    1. Hi Dessy-Ann, thanks for sharing your thoughts. As a parent teacher I try my best to model what I learn first at home. Therefore, when the process is been continued it makes it even more comfortable. As much as this is useful to us, just imagine how this can assist our students in their writing process.
