Its All about The 6+1 Trait
Week 30th October- 3rd November
It's another time for blogging and my eye opener from this class sessions is The 6+1 Trait. The 6+1 trait model, often used in the context of writing and literacy education, is a framework for assessing and improving the quantity of written communication. It consist of seven key traits, which are:
(1) Ideas: The content and main message of the writing.
(2) Organization: The structure and flow of the writing.
(3) Voice: The authors unique and engaging style.
(4) Word Choice: The use of precise and effective vocabulary.
(5) Sentence Fluency: The rhythm and readability of sentences.
(6) Conventions: The correctness of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
(7) Presentation: The overall visual appealing format of the writing.
Are you aware that these traits provide a systematic approach to evaluating and enhancing the quality of ones written work? With the "6 +1" trait being the holistic judgment of the overall piece. Teachers often use this model to guide students in developing their writing skills.
This Strategy was an eye opener for me since it was unknown to me. I really like the role it plays in the writing process. It reminds me of the six food groups where you need a little from each group to make it a complete or balance meal and the seventh one being presentation. Making it appealing or attractive so that persons will definitely want it.
As a Home Economics teacher I see this as the ingredients that is needed for preparing a delicious meal but in language its the ingredients needed for a beautiful writing piece. As our lecturer always say teaching is an art. I am so excited that I already introduce this strategy to my daughter and really looking forward in sharing it with my other students. Therefore I am looking forward in hearing some beautiful pieces that will be mind blowing.
While searching the internet I came across a very interesting yet short video which I have shared with you. I really hope that it will be useful to you as well. Please tell me know if it was or you found a more interesting one and are willing to share.
Makeda, I love how you compared the 6+1 writing traits to a balanced meal and making a delicious meal. You are right!!! Certain ingredients are a must to make a delicious cake. When writing, we must also use the "right ingredients" to make our stories interesting and hook our readers. Thank you for that analogy!
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome Dessy-Ann and as I learned, learning should be relatable. Therefore, we need to model well so that our students can follow.

ReplyDeleteHi-ho Makeda,
What an insightful analogy of the 6+1 writing traits in terms of your area of expertise that you put forward. Which one or ones resonated with you the most? For me, it was organization and word choice. Organization is necessary for one’s writing to be ‘stamped’ as excellent in its structured layout. Regarding word choice, I remember you mentioned in your presentation that it can make a difference in the tone and impact of the writing piece, which I also believe to be true. The images you put in also added a delightful ‘touch’ to your blog post. Regards.
Hey Denisha, the one which resonate with me the most is ideas. Therefore, for a story to capture the readers attention , there must be sufficient and great ideas which will grab the readers attention They all have their place in a writing piece but to me ideas are very crucial. Thanks for your kind words.
