Analysing a student piece of writing in Peer Group

 20th-24th November,2023

Its finally here, my last blog. It was a learning experience blogging,  was a bit frustrating at times trying to navigate using technology, however it was worth it all.  I was able to share my class experience and  some new strategies which will be useful when implementing within my classroom and can be used to  enhance students learning. What was really interesting about this class, was the opportunity given to analyse a different student writing pieces. This was really and truly an eye opener for me. This was a new experience and never imagined that ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions and presentation are all important and must be given close attention when analysing a student piece of writing. As a teacher when analysing a piece of writing, ideas must convey the central message and details that support that message.

Additionally, when looking at organization there must be evidence of strong lead, use of sequence and transitional words, highly effective structure and powerful ending. Also for voice there the piece should contain an expressive compelling tone throughout, a voice that meets writers audience and purpose. However for word choice, this entails the specific vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning and enlighten the reader. For sentence fluency, consideration must be given to ,  the way words and phrases flow through the piece this is said to be an auditory trait. When giving attention to convention, one must look closely at  the mechanical correctness of the analysing piece. Last buy not least presentation, which involves the physical appearance of the piece inviting the reader in. These traits must be given special attention when analysing.  Although we were given opportunities as a whole class, individually and in peers I still would have preferred some more practice analysing. It is now safe to say that I am in a better place now before I started this course. It was a long journey but the end result is great, looking forward to implement these new strategies from January during my practice teaching. Dessy-Ann and Denisha it was nice being your blogging buddy, however I pray that it doesn't end here because am looking for each of us to make a difference in the lives of our students.

  1. Well done, Makeda!
You persevered and completed your blogging experience! Concerning your blog post, was analysing the student's writing in peers helpful to you? It was indeed helpful to me because my peer Dessy-Ann was able to add valuable analogies that I did not think about when we both analysed the student's writing. What are your thoughts?

    1. Thanks Denisha, I can say analysing the students writing in peers was helpful to me because we both were able to make similar and different observation while analysing which really aid in my understanding of the student writing. However, I preferred analysing as a whole class because there were multiple responses with different point of views and saw things from different perspective, keeping in mind the 6+1 writing trait. Therefore would you recommend that teachers should incorporate more peer grouping within their class activities?

    3. Thank you Denisha, I totally agree with you. Additionally, peer grouping fosters social development, provides emotional support, and enhance motivation and engagement through healthy competition and shared interests. With all these benefits, I don't see why we shouldn't as teachers incorporate more peer grouping within our class activities.

    1. Hello Dessy-Ann, I do think that we can incorporate blogging in our classroom because there are benefits that can be derived. Blogging encourages students to express themselves in a more informal and creative manner, which can improve their writing skills, also students develop digital literacy as they navigate online platforms. Also it often involves reflecting on and analysing topics, fostering critical thinking skills and encouraging students to articulate their thoughts more thoughtfully .Additionally, it provides a platform for students to showcase their creativity and unique perspectives, promoting individuality and self-expression.
